This year I’ve been learning to garden. Last year, this plant sprung up with big black ants all over it, and I promptly pulled it out of the ground thinking it was too ugly to be a real plant. It had to be a weed. I thought I was solving an ant problem, too, by getting rid of this thing.
A few weeks later as I was discussing the weed I pulled, a lady told me that she thought it was a real plant. But she wasn’t sure without seeing it.
So I did a poll on my [old] family blog and my readers all yelled, "Don’t pull! That’s a beautiful peony!!" They helped spared its life.
This must be the ugly duckling of plants.
